Gauhati Cine Club
Cultivating the Art of Cinema Since 1965
Our Story
The legend of Assamese films began since pre –independence era. The first Assamese film, Joymoti was made in 1935, just four years before the first talkie was made in India. Jyotiprasad Agarwala, the twentieth century Assamese creative genius, made the first Assamese film Joymoti, a talkie, in that year. Inspired by his painstaking efforts, many filmmakers from this land of blue hills and red river have been continuously contributing in the field of filmmaking till this date and bringing laurels in the national as well as international arenas. It was not possible for the viewers and film lovers of this remote area like Assam to view internationally acclaimed films. The hesitation of the cinema house owners to exhibit good and parallel movies is another setback in case of enjoying the aesthetical values and artistic excellence of the films made by master film makers across the globe. It is against this back, drops a handful of film lovers, critics, writers under the leadership of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, came together and gave birth to the Gauhati Cine Club (GCC) in 1965.
The aim of GCC was to create serious discourse and debate in the cinematic and intellectual world of Assam and also to create awareness in the society about cinema as a serious art form. The untiring journey of GCC continues towards that direction.
About Us
Dr. Bhupen Hazarika founded the ‘Gauhati Cine Club’ on April 26, 1965 along with a handful of film lovers, critics, and writers.
Today, the city’s earliest film society is more than 60 years old and screens numerous films for film-lovers to enjoy and appreciate. It also organizes the prestigious “International Guwahati Film Festival” annually.
Gauhati Cine Club is registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The club was established in the year 1965. The main objective of GCC is to create awareness in the society about cinema as a serious art and to form an environment for serious discourse and debate in the cinematic and intellectual world.
The GCC is constantly putting its effort to exhibit good films at very low cost and with utmost care. As we are committed to society and especially the film lovers – those who consider films not only as a medium of entertainment but also as a means of new thinking and study – we too are committed to helping the people of our society in their hour of grief and distress.
